Evolutionary and Functional Genomics

The Parsch laboratory studies evolutionary and functional genomics, working primarily with the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. We use methods such as microarrays and transgenics to investigate gene expression variation within and between natural populations and to test the function of specific gene-regulatory sequences, including promoters and microRNAs. We use methods such as microarrays and transgenics to investigate gene expression variation within and between natural populations and to test the function of specific gene-regulatory sequences, including promoters and microRNAs. We are also interested in the molecular evolution of genes that differ in expression between males and females (sex-biased genes) and use population genetic methods (analysis of DNA sequence variation) to infer the type and strength of selection affecting the evolution of protein-coding genes.
