The removal of unwanted cells by apoptosis is critical for animal development and the maintenance of cellular homeostasis. We are investigating - at single cell resolution - mechanisms that control apoptosis. To that end, we are using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a model and state of the art genetic, cell biological and biochemical approaches.
Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles that constantly fuse and divide. We are also interested in determining the role and regulation of mitochondrial dynamics. In addition, we are studying the functional significance of mitochondrial morphology at the cellular and organismal level. To that end, we are again using C. elegans as a model and various state of the art experimental approaches.
