Prof. Dr. Dirk Schueler

Research in the lab of Prof. Dr. Dirk Schueler is focused on the formation of magnetosomes, which are specififc magnetic organelles formed by magnetotactic bacteria. We want to understand how the bacteria biomineralize perferctly shaped magnetite crystals and asssemble them into highly ordered intracellular chains that efficiently serve for navigation in the earths magnetic field. Our research interests comprise the microbiology and diversity of magnetotactic bacteria, their cell biology and ultrastructure, and the biochemical and genetic mechanisms governing the biomineralization and assembly of magnetosomes chains. A further topic is the functionalization of bacterial magnetosomes and their utilization as advanced magnetic nanomaterials in a number of biotechnological applications.
